High Definition TV is a revolution in picture quality, with intense colour, clarity and definition.

HDTV is coming soon, with many broadcasters already filming some programmes in High Definition format. Sky has confirmed plans to start HD broadcasts in 2006 while some Hollywood movie studios have already committed to producing movies on HD DVD. You will need an HDTV receiver or HD DVD player, but, most importantly, you will need a High Definition compatible TV to enjoy the visual benefits.

So what is HDTV?

HDTV is a digital broadcast system that delivers picture quality vastly superior to current broadcasts. The improvement in clarity, depth and sharpness of screen images is instantly visible.

The current TV broadcast system in the UK (PAL) delivers 576 active lines of interlaced picture information. HDTV provides an average of eight times more data on a display screen than a standard broadcast, thanks to the increased picture resolution.

There are three HDTV standards:

720p - progressively scanned 720 line picture

1080i - interlaced 1080 line picture

1080p - progressively scanned 1080 line picture

Buying an HD Ready TV now means your TV will be able to display the higher resolution HDTV when it becomes available. In the meantime you can make the most of the product's high specifications to get the best possible results from current broadcasts.

A new European industry-wide technical standard has been defined for products which will be able to display High Definition images. Any product featuring this logo guarantees:

• A minimum native resolution of the display is 720 lines in widescreen format.

• The display will accept HD signals via component video and DVI or HDMI™ interface.

• HD component inputs that will accept the following video formats:

a) 1280 x 720p

b) 1920 x 1080i (at 50 and 60Hz)

• A DVI or HDMI™ input with HDCP copy protection support.
